I have graduated PhD (1981) from BHU, Varanasi and Post-doc (1986-88) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA as a Rockefeller Foundation Fellow. My area of teaching and research included demographic models, survey methodology, estimation and projection of HIV/AIDS and clinical biostatistics.
I have worked as faculty - Lecturer (1982-89), Reader (1989-1998) and Professor (1998-200) at IIPS Mumbai; and Director, ICMR - National Institute of Medical Statistics, New Delhi (2000-2017), National Consultant, WHO (2018-19), India and presently as ICMR - National Chair (Medical Statistics).
I have authored over 235 peer-reviewed articles, 12 books and over 45 research monographs/reports, and 19 students have been awarded Ph.D. under his supervision/co-supervision.
I have been associated with NACO’s HIV Sentinel Surveillance and Estimation in India; National Family Health Survey (NFHS) as Chair/Co-Chair of the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC); India’s National Task Force on Covid-19 - Operation Research Group. constituted by the ICMR/MoHFW. I have established the Clinical Trials Registry – India (CTRI) as National Repository of Clinical Trials in India.
I have been President of the Indian Association for the Study of Population (IASP), 2006-10, Indian Society for Medical Statistics (ISMS), 2008-10; and Chief Editor of Demography India (2002-06).
I have been awarded Prof. PV Sukhatme Memorial National Award (2020) in Statistics for my lifetime contributions and achievements in the field of official statistics by the Govt. of India, Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation.
